Reflection...

As we near the end of 2008, it’s a time to reflect. Today’s reflection: The Arthritis Prevention Control and Cure Act (HR 1283). Although we have come a long way to see the success of HR 1283 in the House, there are only a few key Senators in the way of this bill. As this lame duck session comes to an end, I’m left with disappointment. To me it seems simple, we need more Pediatric Rheumatologists. We need better treatments. We need a cure. Wouldn’t money now help in health care costs later? Maybe that’s why I’m not in politics, because to me it seems simple.

Great Luncheon!

Our Commitment to a Cure lunch was held this week, and even though we were a little nervous about the change in format it went even better than I had hoped. We had a lot of new people in attendance, people who were not really familiar with our programs or services. It was great to have their attention and be able to share what we do, and to have the financial support of so many in the room. One of the most gratifying things for me was observing all the people who came up to talk to our speakers after the event. So many women had similar stories to Norma and Julie, and were eager to just talk to someone who understood what they had experienced. The two young ladies, Jessica and Jasmine, presented their stories so well in front of a crowd of strangers – they were very engaging! And I was especially proud of our own Eileen Martin, who after seven years on staff got up in front of an audience for the first time and shared how her own family has been impacted by arthritis. It was a joy to participate in the event, and we’re so grateful for all the support people provided to us.

My Food Contains What?

Is it possible for certain foods to contain good bacteria? Yes, in fact this bacteria is known as a probiotic. A probiotic is a small live microorganism found in food or supplements that help to promote health. In your system alone there are trillions of bacteria, many of which protect you from disease. Sometimes the balance between the good and bad bacteria can throw you off and your health can suffer. This usually occurs when a person takes antibiotics, which tends to kill off the friendly and unfriendly bacteria. Some conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, may by associated with fewer friendly bacteria in the stomach.

But, where there's a problem there's a solution. You see, probiotics can be found in several forms making it very affordable for people who would like to help make there immune system stronger. They can be found in yogurts (only if there's a live culture seal on the label), buttermilk, sour cream, sauerkraut, sourdough and bleu or other strong smelling cheeses. Also, there are now some drinks like goodbelly, that contain pure probiotics and taste pretty yummy.

Even better, you can make the healthy effects of probiotics even stronger by consuming carbohydrates that stay in the intestine and nourish friendly bacteria. They are found in oatmeal, flax, barley and other whole grains, berries and legumes.

So next time your at the store and thinking you aren't feeling well, maybe take a moment to try some probiotics you never know how helpful these tiny microorganisms of good bacteria can be.

Shake away the Pain

How can someone with arthritis feel better? They can shake away the pain by belly dancing. I know it sounds funny, but it's true. Belly Dancing provides endurance, flexibility and strength from a low-impact workout that makes your body strong. In fact, there are several benefits like increasing core muscle strength, increasing flexibility, improving cardiovascular condition, forming better posture, even stronger bones and reduced risk of osteoporosis. Belly Dancing can even enhance your coordination and balance by improving your concentration and agility.

Belly Dancing, also called Middle Eastern Dance, is easy on the joints and is one of the newest exercise trends for people of all ages. Belly Dancing is a fun way to get moving without getting bored of the routine and you don't even need any experience!

People are always looking for new ways to workout and Belly Dancing just might be that something they want to put on their 2009 list to try.
